Job Position Summary
The GM Tanker role exists to ensure the continuous success of the tanker fleet management business by operationalising growth strategies, performance standards and competency development, adhering to FML India's business strategy and budget. While he/she will report to the Director Tanker for most matters, he will have an indirect reporting to the COO for matters which require policy changes such as changes to Office Manuals , KPI’s, Crew Training , Crew Quality and Processes. In order to have a firsthand knowledge of the Vessel Operations, To have a firsthand knowledge of the Vessel Operations, he/she will also be in-charge of supervising 0-2 FPD Managers.
Roles and Responsibilities
Operationalise strategy for growth of the Dry Fleet management business in India
• Accountable for the operationalisation of growth strategy for the tanker fleet management business in India
• Develop short-term and mid-term objectives and goals to track and measure achievement of FML India's growth strategy, based on industry trends and projection of customer needs, and drive its implementation through Group Managers & derive appropriate financial targets to track and measure the success of developed objectives and goals, and report progress to Director Tanker.
Drive adherence to vessel performance standards for Tanker in India
• Accountable for the adherence to Group vessel performance standards for Tankers in India
• Drive the scheduling and implementation of regular vessel audits through Group Managers
• Drive implementation of corrective action plans or preventive measures for cases of non-compliance to Group vessel performance standard through Group Managers based on insights derived from vessel audit reports
Implement technological and human competencies improvement roadmap within tanker fleets in India
• Accountable for the operationalisation of improvement roadmap for tankers technological and human competencies
• Collaborate with HR and Ancillary Services Lead to develop appropriate crew training and technological upgrades in adherence to technological and human competencies improvement roadmap and drive their implementation through Group Managers
• Derive appropriate targets to measure success and efficiency of developed training and upgrade to monitor and report achievement levels to Director.
Maintain safety and reliability standards onboard Bulk & Container fleet
• Accountable for maintaining high levels of safety and reliability aboard tanker fleet
• Develop policies and programmes to create a safety-oriented culture onboard tanker fleet in adherence to FML safety standards based on high level insights derived from vessel audit reports, providing direction to Group Managers address inadequacies aboard vessels if needed
• Drive the clear and regular communication of safety and reliability standards to all FML crew in India through Group Managers
Oversee day to day operations of a fleet
• Accountable for the adherence of tanker vessels to establish minimum operating standards.
• Overseas the standardisation of onboard technical management across all tanker fleet vessels in adherence to guidelines developed by Director tanker , providing discretion in resolving inefficiencies and promoting best practices when needed.
• Provide support and advice to group managers in the event of any crises / incidents and ensures that appropriate assistance is provided for quick resolution.
Drive continuous improvement within the department
• Role model continuous performance improvement, drive standards & culture.
• Collaborate with Director and employees within the department to identify improvements that can be made to policies, processes, or technological infrastructure.
• Drive the operationalisation and implementation of department / company projects, improvement initiatives within the department through managers and employees.
• Monitor adherence to timeline and budget for continuous improvement projects and technological implementations within the department and report progress to Chief Operating Officer/ Director.
• Review and comment on workforce plan developed by HR to ensure adequate manpower for critical positions.
• Monitor and report improvement in outcomes within the department to Chief Operations Officer/ Director.
• Ensuring PIP and KPIs under performance management process and develop objectives and goals
• Prepare for TMSA / DBMS / Right Ship / Regulatory compliances with the team
• Lead in organizing seafarer pre-joining briefing.
Manage and review costs
• Responsible for adherence of all Tanker / Dry fleet crew costs to budget
• Accountable for the review, approval, and projection of crew wages & expenses budgets presented by Group Managers, and for the aggregation and presentation of final budget to COO, India Operations / Director Dry / Tankers.
• Assist Director Tankers / Dry in the identification, escalation and resolution of areas of anomaly in budget reports for the department.
Develop human capital
• Develop capabilities of direct reports through formal or informal mentorship and implementation of development plans
• Drive the identification and addressing of gaps in competencies through performance review of direct reports and collaboration with HR
• Review and comment on workforce plan developed by HR to ensure adequate manpower for critical positions
• Handling Promotion and Mentoring aspects of the team, managers / direct reports.
• Ensure that training of seafarers is in compliance with the Training Matrix & requirements set out in the crew appraisals as well as what is mandated as a part of Performance Improvement Plan during investigations.
• Primarily maintains relationships with leadership team, other departments, direct reports and vessel crew, as well as key external stakeholders such as customers and regulatory bodies in India
• Collaborates with leadership team, other departments, direct reports and vessel crew to maintain and improve operational standards of Tanker / Dry fleet in India, and with key external stakeholders to ensure compliant and steady growth of fleet management business
• Resolves day-to-day conflicts between other departments, direct reports and vessel crew to align efforts in achieving objectives and conflicts between FML and key external stakeholders to protect professional relationships and FML interests.
Job Requirements
• Proven success in a senior fleet management position in a global organisation
• Experience driving business expansion and revenue growth across regions or at a global level
• In-depth understanding of operational and safety processes and standards in a ship management company and the ship management industry
• Strong understanding of business strategy within the ship management industry
• Hold MEO Class 1 Certificate of competency or Certificate of Competency II/2 (for Master/Chief Officer) or Certificate of Competency III/2 (for Chief Engineer/Second Engineer) under STCW Code or equivalent relevant industry experience in a similar role.
