Manager, Environmental Compliance

Key Roles and Responsibilities
Take ownership of the Company’s Environmental Compliance process and the maintenance and upkeep of the SMS as it relates to Environmental compliance.
Responsible for formulating environmental targets for ship and shore and monitoring progress towards achieving them.
Responsible for formulating targets for energy efficiency, conservation and GHG emission reduction on ship and ashore.
Analysing internal and external environmental audit findings, determining root causes and formulating effective preventive actions.
Overseeing the fleetwide implementation of GHG emission reduction initiatives adopted by the IMO or local governing bodies such as the European Commission or state governments.
Manage risks and develop contingencies
· Accountable for driving the prevention of environmental risk through policies and processes in Audit, Compliance, Port of Calling and PSC
· Support reporting manager in the identification of potential environmental risks brought about by environmental incidents or new environmental regulation.
Drive continuous improvement within the department on vessels
· Responsible for implementing and driving continuous improvement in environmental performance on vessels through the effective implementation of the environmental section of the Company’s SMS.
· Collaborate with the reporting manager, and employees within the department to identify improvements that can be made to policies, processes, or technological infrastructure.
· Drive the operationalization and implementation of improvement initiatives within the department through managers and employees
· Monitor and report improvement in outcomes within the department to reporting manager
Oversee day-to-day operations
· Accountable for the resolution of major issues of environmental non-compliance identified in vessel audits
· Monitor and review major issues of environmental non-compliance observed during vessel audits and provide comment and direction to reporting manager to drive resolution,
· Derive high level insight from analysis of compliance reports to support policy planning for reporting manager
Develop human capital
· Develop capabilities of direct reports through formal or informal mentorship and implementation of development plans
· Drive the identification and addressing of gaps in competencies through performance review of direct reports and collaboration with HR
· Review and comment on workforce plan developed by HR to ensure adequate manpower for critical positions
Relationship:
· Primarily maintains relationships with reporting manager, direct reports as well as key external stakeholders such as regulatory bodies.
· Collaborates with reporting manager, direct reports to ensure compliance of vessel operations to FML environmental standards and with key external stakeholders to ensure compliance to industry and regulatory environmental standards
· Resolves day-to-day conflicts between direct reports to align efforts in achieving objectives and conflicts between FML and key external stakeholders to ensure company interests and professional relationships are protected
Job Experience, Functional Knowledge and Qualifications
· Bachelor’s degree/Diploma or equivalent in Marine Engineering/ Navigation/Internationally recognized shipping degree/qualification
· Hold MEO Class 1 Certificate of competency or Certificate of Competency II/2 (for Master/Chief Officer) or Certificate of Competency III/2 (for Chief Engineer/Second Engineer) under STCW Code
• In-depth knowledge understanding of environmental regulations, GHG emission reduction schemes adopted by international or local bodies
• Previous experience in similar roles is preferred.
• An engineer is preferred.
