AI Platform Engineer
The Caravel Group, headquartered in Hong Kong, is a privately held and globally diversified group with operations across maritime services, dry bulk commodity trading, institutional investment management, and philanthropy.
Its maritime division includes Fleet Management Limited, the world’s second-largest ship management company with over 600 vessels under technical management and over 120 vessels under Newbuilding supervision. Caravel also owns the International Maritime Institute (IMI) in India, reinforcing its commitment to maritime talent development.
Through Caravel Asset Management, the Group invests globally across public markets and private equity, while its philanthropic arm, The Caravel Foundation, supports the education and well-being of underprivileged youth across Hong Kong, China, and India.
Job Position Summary
Caravel is scaling AI as a core capability across the group—so we’re engineering it like mission-critical software: secure, observable, scalable, and supportable. Join the CEO’s office in a highly autonomous, hands-on role building and running a personalised AI agent platform that multiplies executive productivity and decision speed.
As an AI Platform Engineer, you will be a hands-on software engineer responsible for building and operating the technical platform that enables AI systems to run reliably in production. This is not a research or experimentation role – It is about turning AI capability into real, dependable software services.
You’ll partner with Fleet Management Limited (FML) Technology to align with production standards and deliver reliable AI services that support a global maritime operation. If you thrive in a forward-looking environment and want to deliver real, measurable impact at the executive and enterprise level, then we’d love to hear from you!
Key Role and Responsibilities
As the AI Platform Engineer in the Office of the CEO, you will be the primary technical partner responsible for building the CEO's "Personalized AI Operating System." You will develop custom AI agents and autonomous reports that connect the CEO to the entire organization, reducing information latency and enabling faster strategic decisions.
This is a builder role—you are tasked with turning high-level goals into production-ready agents and actionable intelligence reports by leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs), Agentic AI frameworks, and internal systems
As the AI Platform Engineer, your typical day will include:
Agentic AI Development:
- Design and build autonomous agents that can plan, execute, and iterate on complex tasks like drafting strategy memos, market research, and stakeholder communication.
- Build automated dashboards and reporting systems that aggregate data from multiple departments to provide the CEO with an up-to-date view of the organization, as a whole, and by business unit
Steer software and platform foundations:
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and platform components that support AI workloads
- Implement shared platform capabilities such as environment provisioning, configuration, secrets management, and deployment pipelines
- Apply software engineering best practices (version control, testing, CI/CD, documentation) across all platform components
- Ensure alignment with FML technology standards, coding practices, and architectural guidelines
Navigate AI systems into production:
- Build and operate MLOps / LLMOps pipelines that support model packaging, versioning, deployment, and rollback
- Enable production-ready AI services (APIs, batch jobs, internal tools) with clear operational ownership
- Integrate AI components into existing systems and data flows rather than creating isolated solutions
- Embed observability into AI services, including logging, metrics, tracing, and runtime health indicators
Anchor reliability, scalability, and support:
- Design systems that scale predictably and can be supported by relevant teams
- Work with FML Technology teams including Cybersecurity and Operations to define runbooks, support models, and incident response processes
- Apply security-by-design principles, including access control, data protection, and environment segregation
- Continuously improve platform robustness, performance, and cost efficiency
Relationship
INTERNAL:
- Office of the CEO (Caravel) strategic priorities and delivery outcomes
- Fleet Management Limited Technology teams – standards, architecture, security, and production readiness
- Data, Analytics, and Product teams - Platform enablement and integration
EXTERNAL:
- Cloud and AI platform vendors
- Specialist partners or consultants (as required)
Job Experience, Functional Knowledge and Qualifications
ESSENTIAL:
- 4+ years of hands-on experience as a Software Engineer, Platform Engineer, or Backend Engineer, building production systems, with at least 1-2 years focused directly on agentic AI, LLM application development, or AI platform engineering
- Expert-level knowledge of Python for backend and data manipulation
- Hands on experience with AI / LLM capability, including understanding how large language models are used, deployed, and operated in real systems (using OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini or similar) along with detailed exposure in developing RAG-based systems in production environments.
- Strong experience building APIs and backend services, including working with data-intensive systems (e.g., pipelines, analytics platforms, ML-enabled services, JSON)
- Practical cloud engineering experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud including deploying and operating services in production
- Solid experience with modern engineering practices: CI/CD, automated testing, version control, and infrastructure automation.
- Experience designing systems for reliability, scalability, security, and operational support (not just functional correctness)
- Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or similar science-based background
DESIRABLE:
- Experience with MLOps / LLMOps tooling (e.g., MLflow, Kubeflow, model registries, evaluation pipelines)
- Familiarity with containerisation and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience working in regulated or operationally critical environments (e.g., maritime, logistics, transport)
