Assistant Manager - New Building

Job Position Summary
The position is responsible for supporting the Head of New Building and team Managers with planning, coordination, and supervision of new shipbuilding projects from contract signing through vessel delivery. The role acts as a bridge between ship owners, shipyards, classification societies, and internal technical and enable teams to ensure vessels are delivered safely, on schedule, and according to technical specifications and regulatory requirements and support to transfer ships to our technical management after delivery as well.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
Employee lifecycle & engagement
• Assist The Managers in managing end to end newbuilding project timelines, milestones, and deliverables.
• Support the teams in evaluating bids and proposals for newbuilding supervision and added value technical services.
• Coordinate with shipyards, designers, classification societies, and vendors to ensure project progress.
• Prepare project documentation, technical reports, and progress summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
• Support risk assessment activities and participate in project review meetings.
• Collaborate with site superintendents and shipyard engineers to resolve construction or quality issues.
• Document inspection results and follow up on corrective actions.
• Business travel is required to support projects and business development.
• Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to contribute to the overall success of the organization.
• Work on ad-hoc tasks, as required.
Relationship
INTERNAL:
• Integral member of the New Building HQ.
• Acting as a team member, participating in internal discussions and activities with the team.
• Regularly reports project progress and escalates issues to the Head of Newbuilding or the Managers to ensure alignment with project goals.
• Consults the Legal, Insurance team regarding contract interpretations, change orders, and claims.
• Engages with the Operations or Ship Management team to ensure vessel operability, maintainability, and smooth handover after delivery.
• Working closely with other internal departments and building strong working relationships within FML.
• Cooperate with FML admin, accounting, business development, IT, etc.
EXTERNAL:
• Work with the on-site new building team, to gather information and documents, as necessary.
• Maintains ongoing communication with the ship owner or the owner's representatives to provide project updates, discuss key decisions, obtain approvals, and ensure alignment with the owner’s technical and commercial expectations.
• Communicates frequently with the shipyard’s project managers and engineers to monitor construction progress, resolve technical issues, and ensure the vessel is built according to approved specifications.
• Coordinates with third party inspection agencies or surveyors to support independent inspections, quality assessments, and test witnessing as required.
Job Experience, Functional Knowledge and Qualifications
• A minimum qualification of a bachelor’s degree in Business, Project Management or related disciplines.
• At least 7 or 10 years of project management work experience.
• Proficiency in English, Mandarin and Cantonese are essential to succeed in this role.
• Proficiency in Microsoft office applications including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
